The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro called for new and
innovative uses of the mass media of communications to bring about a global
understanding of the critical issues facing our planet as it approaches the
21st Century. But will adva nces in communications technology help liberate
individual and societal cultural expression, for positive ends? Or will the
media serve only as forms of manipulation and cultural repression? This anthology
draws upon papers presented to a symposium on co mmunications and development
which preceded the Conference of the International Institute of Communications
in Montreal, Canada.
